Guidelines for the Port Gibson, May 2-3 2003
The impression for the federals is the 21st Iowa, Stones brigade, Carr’s division McClernand’s Corps. Army of the Tenn. From April 29 to May 1st 1863
The impression is basic federal issue uniform. The 21st had, just 3 weeks prior to the battle, been completely refitted at Millikens bend.
Coats.
Sack coats for enlisted prefered
No state jackets.
Frock coat for NC Os allowed
Trousers
Federal issue sky blue kersey only.
Officers may where dark blue trousers with lt. blue welt.
Note. Officers are to be neat in appearance; their uniforms are to be in good condition. No beat up headgear and no faded out coats and shoulder straps. Foot officers are to carry knapsacks, all line officers who would be mounted are to the get on the best they can without their baggage.

Civilian drawers allowed
No drawers, allowed but I wouldn’t try it.

Weapons and accouterments
Enfield rifled muskets, preferred
History indicates that this was the weapon first issued to this regiment and carried for the duration of the Vicksburg campaign
55 or 61 Springfield rifled muskets are allowed
Accouterments, the regiment had been recently refitted
Federal issue accouterments of Pattern of 1857 and pattern of 1861.
All boxes should have plates and tins
Cartridge box slings should have breastplates affixed.
Sewn or 2 rivet scabbards
Proper belt and cap box.
Canteens
Smooth side preferred
Folded cloth or tape canteen slings.
Covers of appropriate jeans cloth preferred
covers of readily available cloth. Allowed
Knapsacks
55 double bags only. Orders where given prior to the campaign that the men were to carry their knapsacks
in order to carry extra ammunition and rations. knapsacks- preferred over bedrolls
Blankets
Fed issue blankets preferred
Civilian blankets and coverlets allowed
Shelter halves and gum blankets, for the sake of your feet one or the other
Correct issued painted haversacks.
Note, we will be issuing rations so bring your haversack EMPTY except of utensils and plate, and possibly empty poke sacks.
Tin ware
Correct tin dippers, boilers or coolers, no preference
Ammunition , each enlisted man should have a full cartridge box 40 rounds plus 40 more rounds correctly rolled and bundled with caps to be carried in their knapsack.
remember this is a marching event. so get in shape NOW. start walking. the total route will be 16 miles in two days. Also make it easy on yourself and make your load as light as you can by getting rid of unnecessary extras.
this will be mainly an immersion event, with this in mind we have decided to allow no cameras.
