This is to be the first of many posts for information about what will be done at Port Gibson preservation march, next year.
Members of the WIGS are organizing this march. As soon as we get a little farther down the road we will be posting additional points of contact but for now John Cleaveland will be the single point of contact. I can be reached at jcleaveland@earthlink.net.
The march will start at sunrise Friday the 2nd; the march will start on the Bruinsburg rd. It will end in Port Gibson late sat afternoon at a church that served as a hospital after the battle. The march route is 15 miles long it follows the same roadbed that it did in 1863. About half the march route is a very lonely paved back road. the remaining half of the march is a lightly graveled dirt road which winds it’s way across the landscape on the tops of knife like ridges. There is nothing modern on the dirt sections of the march. The march route is the same as the route that the Army of the Tenn., marched on in April 30, May 1st 1863, and including the part of the route which was where the battle of port Gibson was fought. There will be some maybe lots of skirmishing during the event based on what history dictates.
There are three structures significant to the march and battle that are along the route. These are the ruins of Windsor plantation, a beautiful ruin of a once magnificent 4 story house, all that remains of it our 20 or so 30 foot columns, surmounted by iron Corinthian capitals, the bethel church, a small gothic revival church whose steeple was riddled by the passing union army, and the Shafer house, a plantation plain house owned by the state of miss which still does not have electricity, the battle started in the houses front yard. Please read Ed Bearss’ history of the Vicksburg campaign and you will see these places spoken of very prominently. These are part of what we are trying to help preserve by our efforts.
Dave Ray a member of the Cleburne’s and a wig and I went over the routes this past Thursday. After seeing the ground for myself I can say that I believe that no matter how far you have to travel to come to this event you will go home satisfied that you were among the participants in this event. Also involved in the planning of this event is Jim Woodrick, who works for the state of Miss.
By participating in this event you will be making a contribution to save and protect what I see as one of the most pristine and most undisturbed major battlefields in the country. Port Gibson's protection and preservation is not an out of reach proposition. Our efforts can make a significant difference, to the battle field itself and to its local and regional supporters, these people are excited as we are about what we propose to do.
The impression for the march will be the 21st Iowa, of the 2d brigade commanded by Col.W.M.Stone, of BG E.A. Carr's 14th division of McClernands XIIIcorps. Army of the Tenn.
we would like to depict this regiment scale but we will settle for as many 25 man companies that can pass the guidelines for the event.
As of now we have commitments from the following groups to form companies.
The following men have committed to raising 25men companies for the event
Rick Joslyn, wool hat boys, wig
Joe Smotherman, Cleburne’s, Wig
Chris Newton, The sore foot boys
Chris Utley, Wig
I have asked Joe lictey to be our Sgt Maj. and Harry Connelly to be Adj.
I have been asked to Battalion Commander, so John Cleaveland will be Lt Col. of the 21st Iowa.
We will be adding names to our staff and companies to the roll as people step forward and commit to what promises to be a very rewarding event. THIS IS NOT A INVITATION ONLY EVENT. This is a preservation event. There will be guidelines for what is acceptable for this event and these guidelines will be enforced. The guidelines will cover all aspects of what we expect from each participant. We will also post our general goals so that you, as a participant will now what to expect from us. that being said please don’t expect us to give away the whole event we like surprises.
To participate we are asking for each individual to raise 50 dollars and the cost of the rations about an additional 12 dollars.
We will post the impression guidelines shortly, once we conclude all of our research, the preliminary evidence is that it is basic western fed.
We will inspect everyone as to their compliance.
We will work hard to get out all the additional information as soon as we can. If you have any questions email me or post them here.
Hoping you can help us in our efforts,
John Cleaveland, Dave Ray
