People,
The property in question includes the Murphy Farm and the land covered by AP Hill's flank attack and artillery positions from the Sept 1862 battle of Harper's Ferry.
This property is not only important to Civil War history, but to Civil Rights history! The Niagara Movement held their 1906 meeting on this property because the John Brown Fort was there. Of course, the Niagara Movement was one of the earliest Civil Rights organizations and evolved into the NAACP.
Last, the development of this property would greatly diminish, if not completely destroy, the scenic and historic view shed from Bolivar Heights. At the present time, you can stand on Bolivar Heights and see the ridge where AP Hill placed his guns and get a good understanding of the battle. I sincerely doubt that will be possible when 180 houses are on that property!
So, whether you are interested in preservation for social, military, or just scenic reason, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take five minutes and submit a comment. The park values the comments of living historians so please don't miss a chance to make a difference!
