My great grandfather, James A. Woodhead served as a Private in Company I, Wisconsin 33'rd Infantry Regiment according to archival records.
About 35 years ago, following the death of my mother's father (James Woodhead's son) I received a small package containing 15 uniform buttons and a brass belt buckle. The items were described to me as having belonged to my great grandfather and were from his civil war uniform.
I have kept those items in a dresser drawer ever since. however I recently moved and the package caught my attention. I decided to investigate through the internet. My grandfather died in Grand Island, Nebraska. I went to the Nebraska Civil War Veterans List and found the name of James A Woodhead. It indicated he had served in Wisconsin. I then went to a Wisconsin site, and that provided me with the information that my great grandfather had served with Company I, 33'rd Infantry.
The belt buckle seems to contradict that information. It is rectangular, approximately 2 inches by 3 inches in size and is rather crudely etched with the following:
1st C.CUMBER
VOLUNTEERS
(below that is an etched crown and under that an etched harp with a man or woman proudly forming the front of the harp. The letter M is etched to the bottom left of the harp and the letter A is etched to the bottom right of the harp).
The etched details on the buckle would be in a sideways position if a man were wearing the buckle on a
normal belt fastened around the midwaist.
The back of the buckle has two circular raised pads near one end and a single hook near the other end.
I would like to know if anyone has, or has seen a similar buckle. Is it likely that this is a buckle issued while my great grandfather was a member of Company I, 33'rd Infantry Regiment?
I thank you for any information you are able to provide.
