Gentlemen,
The Winona County Historical Society unanimously approved the idea of hosting a small encampment at the Bunnell House as part of its official line of events for the Victorian Fair on September 21 & 22. In fact, the Bunnell House itself has not been open as part of the fair for some years, and they believe that this offers the perfect opportunity to reopen the location and they expect heavy numbers of visitors!
I will be working on an informational packet that I hope many of you will not be able to refuse in the coming days, but here are a few highlights of the event:
Amenities:
• Located on the grounds of an original home built by a local fur trader in the 1840s with the permission of Chief Wapasha.
• Grounds are completely surrounded by vine-covered iron fence and a canopy of trees, offering wonderful shade and ambience all day long.
• FLUSH TOILIET is conspicuously located in small carriage house on the grounds of the yard. No purple cool aid!
Scenario:
• Authentic scenario for time and place, no “pretending that we’re in Georgia.”
• We will be portraying the “Winona Rangers,” an adhoc group of recruits documented to be in the area in late September of 1862 to maintain calm in the wake of the Dakota Uprising, performing sentry duty, drill and other day-to-day activities.
• Scenario offers wonderful opportunity for civilian interaction as Winona and other eastern towns were flooded with refugees seeking protection from bands of barbarous marauders.
• Members of the 2nd, 3d and 33d Wisconsin regiments have been invited to the event including the Pioneer batallion. Command and rank structure will follow, and will be dependant on the number of participants present.
Promotion:
• Promotion of the Victorian Fair will be publicized throughout Minnesota and heavily in the Twin Cities.
• Heavy visitor load expected to attend Bunnell House.
• Possibility to turn into regular, yearly event at the unit’s discretion.
Please feel free to contact me for more information
