I'd like to see if any of you pards would be interested in such an event. Would love to have you boys cross the river for this...
I already posted this with the 33d, but wanted to extend a special invitation to the Hard Heads.

I'd like to poll the unit about the membership's possible interest in attending the Victorian Fair this year in Winona, Minnesota on September 21 & 22.
The fair is a very well run event that covers a wide range of history and the 1st Minnesota has attended in the past. This year's theme is Vaudeville, which really doesn't have anything to do with the Civil War, but most of those activities will take place on the riverfront. I am proposing that we form a small bivouac camp on the grounds of the historic Bunnel house, one of the oldest structures in the Winona area. The house and grounds are great, I believe it was built by one of Winona's original settlers and it is nesteled in the bluffs just outside of Winona in Homer. For a picture of the house and a brief history, go here: www.winona.msus.edu/historicalsociety/sites/bunnell.asp The picture doesn't show 1/4 of the ground around the house, most of which is nicely shaded and overgrown with trees and vines. Homer is a very small town, and it would provide a restful cool grounds for such an event.
I'm on very good terms with the Historical Society in Winona, and I will see what we can do in terms of a donation to the group, but I wanted to see how many might be interested in making the trip on such short notice. The event might serve as an interesting training ground for Perryville, and I have a feasible scenario that might work for the event for good interaction with the public.
The time would be September 21 & 22 1862 in Winona. This would be during the ensuing panic that streched across Minnesota from the Dakota uprising that broke out in South Western Minnesota in late August. Winona and other Eastern Minnesota towns were crammed with refuges fleeing their farms in fear of the savage attrocities that butchered hundreds of settlers. I will do some research regarding the feasability of a small military presense in Winona during this time, My guess is that at least a platoon of the 6th, 7th or 8th Minnesota could have been in the area for security reasons...and a civilian militia contingement is certainly feasable. It could be a great scenario, and would lend itself towards brandishing our rather early war impressions in preperation for Perryville.
I will have more details shortly, but this sounds like it could be a good time indeed. Mike Hastings and I will be present regardless, but the more the merrier, and this could turn into a regular paying event that is just across the river from you Badger boys.
Thoughts?
