Greetings Hard Heads and Pards,
I just wanted to mention that the Pickett's Mill event was a great time with some of the best soldiering I have been privileged to participate in. Our portrayal of the 5th Kentucky was one of the finest I personally can think of.
John Cleaveland and his staff should be very proud of their efforts. It was a pleasure once again to serve under Col. Dom Dal Bello, Lt. Col. Pat Craddock, and Major Steve Dunfee from the AoP and the WIG respectively. Once again, the AoP and the WIG were able to put together another outstanding battalion!
Our company was a very good mesh of several units including the Hard Head Mess, 33d Wisconsin, Phoenix Iron Pards, Hogg Mess, Columbia Rifles, 122nd New York, Mess #3 and the Southern Guard. Captain Steve Acker and Lieutenant Kevin O'Beirne led us in command with a fine collection of nco's from the various above units. The Hogg's really made us feel at home as we experienced some good first person interactions that were very memorable moments during the event. Just ask Lucas about a certain young lady from Elizabethtown Kentucky named Marian. I think most of Company "F" knew above his affection for this fine lady after our march. The hilly terrian also added another memorable feature to the Pickett's Mill experience. The physical drain of marching and opposing the enemy under warm and humid conditions will always be on my mind. By the time we made our stand in front of the cornfield, each man was full of Georgia dirt, sweat, and gunpowder over his face and hands. It was great ;D. Ramming cartridges helped each soldier feel even closer to the experience Hazen's men had to go through. As one could imagine, most of us slept good after the march and engagement on Saturday.
I want to thank Steve and Kevin for putting together a great company to be a part of. Also I want to thank Scott Frank for his fine work as 2nd Sergeant and Dave Gerow as our Corporal from the Hard Heads. It was also nice to see Matt and Aaron come out from Pennsylvania and Maryland to attend with their pards.
Great to see some fine men from the east such as Columbia Rifles and 122nd New York who actually came to support a Western Theater event. My dress hat is off to you folks.
Further in depth AAR's and a picture from the event should be appearing soon on the Hard Head Mess Website at www.geocities.com/hardheadmess/
Until the next campaign,
Tom
