Try your hand at guessing which Wisconsin Infantry Regiment became the first to "veteranize"-- or re-enlist as "Veteran Volunteers" upon the expiriation of the unit's initial enlistments.

In the Army of the Tennessee it was the 14th Wisconsin...
see Elisha Stockwell's book ".....Sees the Civil War". page 68. QUINER's book on Wisconsin Unit's is used for the source.....
Also in the book is a story about a 33rd Wisconsin soldier trying to pawn off some worthless script on the boys of the 14th Wisconsin........

Certainly would be the first, thanks for the BIG hint.
Surprised that the Bloody 1st wasn't right up there with them......they mustered in about the same time period.

veteranized fairly early, although I don't have a date. The 3rd Wisconsin mustered in early on in Fond du Lac Wisconsin. WILLIARD's diary is printed up in a pretty neat book that I bought a couple of years ago....was rereading portions of it during the BEARS DISASTER #5 in a row (am still glad to be a Packers Fan!). e personally elected to go home (which he did in February 1865ish)....but the soldiers who elected to continue on after the 90 days included in the 3 year enlistment went on VETERAN's Furlough for CHRISTMAS 1864.
So that's fairly early in the 'veteranizing' process. An exact date for the vote and achieving official 'veteran' status is not given in the book......

6th Wisconsin veteranized in December 1864 with 227 reenlisting as veterans. The boys got to go back to Wisconsin in JANUARY 1865.....I'd rather have returned to Arizona....... Wouldn't it be nice if their was list of units and when they veteranized? RJ Samp
