As I was watching the dreaded Packers demolish the Bears yet again, I took time to look at the 29th USCT's company F's roster. I was interested in what part of Wisconsin these men lived prior to enlisting. It was of little surprise that most listed Milwaukee as their home. One man enlisted at Sun Prairie and yet another from Markinson County. Others came from places that I have been unable to locate and so, I am hoping that some of you may help.
Some of the places listed were; Carleton, Ashford, 7Mile Creek, DeKorra and Sumpter. Couldn't find them on the map. Anyone heard of any of these places?

LeRoy,
The reason you can't find those places on the map is that they are most likely not cities or villages, but rather towns. In fact, I represent the Town of Sumpter, which is here in Sauk County. DeKorra Township is near the Dells I believe. Seven Mile Creek is in Juneau County but adjacent to Sauk County. All three towns are within 20 miles of each other, so I am presuming that the Sauk-Juneau-Columbia County area is in fact the correct area for the towns listed.

I’m not sure where the towns or "townships" of Ashford and Carleton are but they can probably be found on the Internet. The Grant County Historical Society (Cunningham Museum) in Lancaster, Wisconsin has a lot of interesting info (display) on an African American settlement near Lancaster called Pleasant Ridge from the Civil War era through the 1960s I believe. I also remember seeing at least two tintypes of black soldiers displayed there too (pretty rare fom what I hear). Alfred Weber was the director then. Not sure who is now. The museum has a lot of cool Civil War items and the monument at the nearby courthouse was the 1st erected in Wisconsin. It lists all of the soldiers of the 33rd Wis who died in the service. The Cunningham museum is located at 129 East Maple Street. Pleasant Ridge was in the Beetown Township I believe. 5 miles west of Lancaster on Slabtown Road is Pleasant Ridge Cemetery,” where you can see the tombstones of the Shepard and Green families in this scenic cemetery located near their former farmland. This area was one of the first African-American settlements in Wisconsin.” Pleasant Ridge info www.pointofbeginnings.org/grant/pleasantridge.html Civil War Vet Thomas Green tombstone, Pleasant Ridge www.pointofbeginnings.org/grant/art/t_pleasantgrave.jpg[/img]
